Volunteers are an essential part of the RAH Africa programme. They ensure that the programme remains cost effective, thereby widening the reach of the programme and assisting an increasing number of children and youth in our country.
A meal packaging event is a fun and engaging way for volunteers to be part of the drive to end child hunger. We host regular public meal packaging events during the year at our warehouses, shopping centres and various other venues. You can obtain the full list of upcoming events by clicking on the Event Calendar button below. Participation at a public meal packaging event is free, and open to volunteers of all ages (children in grade 5 or lower to be accompanied by an adult).
High School learners earn community service hours whilst having great fun and meeting new friends at our meal packaging events!
Take it a step further: Our Volunteer Ambassador Programme
If you have specific skills and time to contribute on a more regular basis to Rise Against Hunger Africa, consider becoming a Volunteer Ambassador. You will be required to attend one or more training workshops, and will need to commit a regular block of time on a monthly basis to the programme. Volunteer Ambassadors assist with all the activities involved before and after a meal-packaging event, as well as assisting in running the event itself. You will need to be reasonably fit, and willing to assist with carrying ingredients and set-up equipment. We require VA's both at corporate events during the week, and at public events on the weekends.
Key to the programme is a series of meal packaging events, where volunteers package the meals. The meals are highly nutritious and comprise of rice, soya, dehydrated vegetable mix and a fortification pack of 23 essential minerals and vitamins specifically formulated to combat malnutrition (complying with the UNICEF standard).
The meal packaging event is a fun and engaging way for volunteers to be part of the drive to end child hunger. 40 volunteers can package 10 000 meals in under two hours! Our volunteers range from children as young as four years old to senior citizens. Scholars that volunteer are awarded a Community Service Certificate.
Given the efficiencies of hosting of meal packaging events, we are able to scale the event from one benefiting a single ECD to a series of packaging events that would benefit an entire community.
